What is a sugar glider???

A sugar glider (Petaurus Breviceps) is a small marsupial native to Australia, Tasmania, Indonesia, and New Guinea. Sugar gliders are nocturnal and do not really stay active in the daytime. Sugar gliders have a membrane called the Patagium that spans from their wrists to their ankles that is how they glide. Gliders are very sociable and should always be kept in pairs or trios (1 male and 2 females). Sugar gliders will bond with you if you take the time and play with them daily. In the wild, they eat insects, sap from eucalyptus trees and acacia gum, as well as many fruits. Female gliders have scent glands near their pouch and near their cloaca. Male gliders have three scent glands, one which is on the head is the most noticeable, as well as one on their chest, and one near their cloaca. The cloaca is where the glider urinates and defecates. The female can have up to four joey's, but most have one or two. A sugar glider is pregnant for approx. sixteen days then the joey(s) climb up into the pouch, by way of a trail that the mother licks for them, this is where they remain for up to 70 days.

Sugar gliders are very unique animals and can very quickly steal your heart. However, they can also be a lot to handle. Sugar gliders require a special diet, there are many to choose from that suits your lifestyle. Check out the diet page for a list of the widely approved Sugar Gliders diets that are used among the glider community. It is very important to choose one of these diets and to only choose one, do not mix the diets. This could lead to the wrong Cal/Phosphorus ratios. Diet is an extremely important part in having healthy gliders. Sugar Gliders require very tall and large cages. They should be large enough for them to be able to freely run around and not feel cramped at all. The more gliders you have one in cage, the bigger the cage needs to be. Toys are important for gliders so they can remain active and happy. Changing their toys plays an important role in keeping them interested! Sugar Gliders are often inquisitive and seem to be fun loving by nature and the more you spend with them the happier they will be.

There are a lot of different opinions related to Sugar Gliders and how they interact with children and as well as other pets (cats, dogs). I am sure your glider would not mind at all jumping around on a cat or dog. However, they are extremely small compared to a dog and not all dogs tolerate little animals all that well. I have seen people who let their cats and dogs as well as their Sugar Gliders roam freely together. If that works for them, then I guess so be it. We would never let our dogs alone in our glider room or alone with one of our Gliders, period! The size difference as well as temperament differences is enough for our common sense to tell us that it could lead to a dangerous encounter. We sometimes let our oldest child hold a glider. However, we do not let them walk around with them or play with them alone. Children are often loud and move too fast for young gliders to tolerate. Our youngest child jumps around and it could be a bad situation if a glider were out and running as well, it could get stepped on!  So, again it is a matter of opinion.

Sugar Gliders can live for quite a long time, about as long as a dog if not longer. Sugar gliders can live up to 15 years and some can live even longer. This is an important decision when thinking long term. Will you be able to take the gliders with you if you move? What about if your family situation changes? Who will care for your Sugar Gliders if you get sick or if you get a different job and you are working more hours? These are all important questions to ask because you cannot really ignore your Gliders just because they are in a cage. They require you to socialize and play with them, they will bond to you!! I have seen so many websites that offer “Rescues”, because they could not be taken care of or because the person did not do the proper research before getting gliders. This is IMPORTANT!!  Sugar Gliders need love, care, compassion and knowledge. Many times people just buy them and expect them to be this amazing little animal. Well that will definitely happen, only if you take care of them, spoil them, love them and go the extra miles to bond with them.

Exotic Animal Vets: Many times you buy Sugar Gliders and realize that they will need to go to the Vet at some point for something. Whether it is a minor or a major reason you should have an Exotic Animal Vet Before the situation occurs! This prevents the animals from getting really sick to even worse, dying! Having an emergency backup is always another good option. You can call around your areas to find a vet, make sure they know and are familiar with Sugar Gliders so that when something happens they know what to expect. This also gives you peace of mind to know where the closest vet is in case of an emergency.

There are those places that shall be not named here: Those places that sell sick animals to the public that take advantage of people who are in awe of such cuteness!! Those “people” if you can call them that, tell people not to listen to what others say about Sugar Gliders and that they know what is best for them. YEAH! Those people who sell sick animals that have parasites and that are too young to be away from their mommies . They also inbreed animals and raise them in filthy conditions. Those businesses that try to sell you cages that are small enough maybe for hamsters or small birds but not for sugar gliders, and then they tell you not to worry about a diet, just feed them these pellets. Those businesses are in it for the money and not for the love of these cute little animals. Stay away from them!!

So after reading the previous paragraph you may or may not know who we are talking about. I think it is very important that you know, I have not seen one person who has bought from these people who are actually happy with their purchase!! This is sad how people are told to not feed Sugar Gliders a wide variety of fruits/ veggies along with an approved diet and worms and such for protein. They are told to feed them what equals out to cat food. Again, do not buy from them!

Look for a reputable Breeder: So once you have done your research and your still hooked on the cute little face and the bushy long tail?? Then you need to do more research and find a reputable breeder.  Many like us, will invite you over to see their gliders and to answer any questions you should have, and you should have a lot!!!! Many breeders actually love their gliders, and like us will not just sell to make a sale. Trust me, we love our babies and their joeys and the money goes right back into maintaining their lifestyle and diets. Any real breeder will tell you that Sugar gliders are not easy little animals to just sit and watch. You have to work at the relationship and it is a long, and rewarding process.

Q: What is a Hedgehog?

A: A hedgehog is a small spiny mammal that are not native to North America. The most common type of hedgehog is the African Pygmy(white-bellied). Hedgehogs will curl into a ball while raising their quills and hissing as a defense. Hedgehogs will grow incredibly strong bonds with their owners who play with them frequently. Hedgehogs must have wheels and the wheels must be flat surfaced because their feet will become entangled in slotted or mesh wheels. If they don't have a wheel they have a very high chase of getting fatty liver disease which is fatal. Hedgehogs are insectivores which means in the wild their main source of food is bugs. Please note that their life expectancy is much shorter in the wild so insects such as meal worms and crickets should be feed as treats and snacks 2 or 3 times a week. There are many different diets that many people feed their hedgehogs finding one that fits you is best. Here is a link read under Diet/Nutrition-

If you are considering buying a glider or hedgie there is a lot you need to know. First off don't buy on the "Oh their so cute!" impulse...Do your research and definitely don't buy from flea markets, fairs, POCKET PETS, or any shows. Only buy from a reputable breeder!
